Art by Barry Kent MacKay
This and the following image are from the same painting as the Yellow-breasted Sapsucker, I posted last month, and the Red-naped Sapsucker, I posted a short while ago. The first shows the northern subspecies of the Red-breasted Sapsucker (S. ruber ruber), a species of sapsucker that ranges through the mountains of western North America, from the extreme northwestern tip of British Columbia, south to California. Birds in the northern part of this range have a red head and breast that is a slightly deeper, richer colour than the birds in the southern half of the range, and the first image shows my painting of that northern form, an adult male above, and an immature female below. I saw this form in British Columbia. Acrylic on compressed hardboard.
