Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl
(Glaucidium brasilianum)

The genus, Glaucidium, is world wide in distribution, and this is one of the more widely distributed species, found from the extreme southern U.S. (Arizona at the Mexican border) south through Central America, deep into South America, as far south as Bolivia and Argentina.

I have shown the northernmost subspecies in this little study, done approximately life-size, in acrylics on compressed hardboard.

These little owls are sometimes active in daylight, especially dull days, and prey upon large insects, small lizards and small snakes and birds and mammals.
