41 More Wild Horses Saved from Capture and Possible Slaughter

I am pleased to announce that, because of a truly global outpouring of support, the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign was successful in raising funds necessary to save 41 beautiful wild horses from slaughter today in Nevada.

This week, we sent a loud and clear message to Governor Sandoval and his administration: Nevada's wild horses are cherished and should not be sent to slaughter. They are icons of Nevada's western heritage and they deserve to be treated humanely. Moreover, with over 80% of Americans opposed to wild horse slaughter, putting wild horses up for auction, the first step in the slaughter pipeline, is simply reprehensible.

Over the past few days, over 12,000 faxes flooded Governor Sandoval's office from outraged citizens who demanded an end to the state's capture and sale of wild horses. Meanwhile, our campaign received donations from citizens around the world, from South Africa to Europe, Canada and across the United States.

On Facebook and Twitter, you shared our message, using the #NV41 hashtag, helping to draw attention to the auction as it was taking place.

As you can see, this tiny foal, photographed yesterday at slaughter auction, is one of the 41 wild Nevada mustangs rescued last night thanks to support from AWHPC! She has been named Diamond and she is safe with her mother now, awaiting transport to their new, temporary pasture until a permanent home is found.

While these 41 wild horses are now safe, we know there are thousands more that need our help to keep them free on the range. Our work is not yet finished and we cannot rest until we resolve the underlying problems.

The Virginia Range is an area of state, local and private land in Storey County, Nevada on the outskirts of Reno. Since the fall of 2012, the state has captured and removed 153 wild horses from the range and sent them to a livestock auction where they could have entered the slaughter pipeline had they not been rescued. The capturing of Nevada's wild horses is inhumane and preventable in many cases. Today, we are working toward new state policies that will protect and preserve the Nevada Virginia Range horses in their habitat.
