'Popular Science' Predicts Nonhuman Rights a Top Story for 2013

According to the magazine Popular Science, the work of the Nonhuman Rights Project will be one of the top science stories of the year 2013.

Ranking seventh on the list of “Fifteen Science and Technology News Bytes from 2013″ is this one:

nonhuman rights Steven WiseCertain animals—such as dolphins, chimpanzees, elephants, and parrots—show capabilities thought uniquely human, including language-like communication, complex problem solving, and seeming self-awareness. By the end of 2013, the Nonhuman Rights Project plans to file suits on the behalf of select animals to procure freedoms (like protection from captivity) previously granted only to humans.

nonhuman rights Steven WiseIncidentally, other items on the Top 15 list include one about the new supercomputer named Yellowstone that’s capable of 1.5 quadrillion calculations per second and “will dramatically improve climate models and visualizations in the earth sciences.”

And from the astronomical world, Popular Science notes that the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy is expected to start chowing down on a giant gas cloud in a brilliant light show somewhere around mid-year.

So, when the first of our nonhuman cousins gets her day in court, we’ll be looking for her to set a precedent not just here on Earth, but all across the galaxy, too!
