League Against Cruel Sports has condemned the Government for resuming its shambolic badger culls in Somerset and Gloucestershire. Up to 1,876 more badgers will be killed without any scientific scrutiny from experts.

The League Against Cruel Sports has today condemned the Government for resuming its shambolic badger culls in Somerset and Gloucestershire.

Joe Duckworth, Chief Executive of the League Against Cruel Sports said:

It is devastating to think that after hundreds of badgers were needlessly shot in the first year of pilot culls, up to 1,876 more badgers will be killed this year, despite the policy being deemed inhumane, and ineffective at tackling the spread of bovine TB by an independent expert panel.

This cull was a farce from the start, and even more so now that the killing of these iconic and protected mammals started again last night without any scientific scrutiny from experts. The Government ought to be ashamed.

We continue to call on the Environment Secretary, Liz Truss to abandon the policy altogether in favour of a badger and cattle vaccination programme and stricter controls on biosecurity and cattle movement."
