High School Rodeo Cancelled

[Ed. Note: Watch Rodeo People Love Animals???.]

From Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK)
February 2011

While Illinois is claiming cancellation of the rodeo is due to budget cuts, the negative publicity generated by SHARK's expose of the rodeo's animal cruelty year after year undoubtedly played a part in the decision.

SHARK is thrilled to announce that the National High School Rodeo will not be returning to Springfield, IL in 2012 & 2013. The State Journal-Register posted this story on January 27, 2011.

State budget cuts mean the National High School Finals Rodeo will not be coming back to Springfield. Illinois Department of Agriculture officials notified organizers this week the state could no longer afford the $1 million annual cost of hosting the event, which was scheduled to return to the Illinois State Fairgrounds in 2012 and 2013.

A follow-up to the story was printed today and my letter to the editor was quoted in the article:

"It's sad to see two supposed leaders so readily give up any semblance of dignity or credibility for any reason, especially the relatively small amount of money from rodeo people," said the letter from Steve Hindi, president of SHARK (Showing Animals Respect and Kindness).

The SHARK letter questioned rodeo attendance estimates and said local officials are showing an "utter lack of concern for humane laws" by pursuing the event.

While Illinois is claiming cancellation of the rodeo is due to budget cuts, the negative publicity generated by SHARK's expose of the rodeo's animal cruelty year after year undoubtedly played a part in the decision.

Rodeo shills Springfield Mayor Frank Edwards, Representative Raymond Poe and others are scrambling to try to reverse the decision and requesting a meeting or conference call with Governor Quinn. SHARK has requested to be a part of the meeting or conference call. We will keep you updated on this issue.
