Research done by the NSPCA had proved that dog racing was highly problematic, James said.

It was prone to abuse and produced vast numbers of surplus animals.

"This led to our considered stance, to oppose the reintroduction and legalisation of dog racing," she said.

Dog racing in South Africa will remain illegal, the National Council of SPCA (NSPCA) said on Wednesday.

"The decision was announced during a briefing in Parliament by the commission who undertook a review of the gambling industry," spokesperson Morgane James said.

The decision was made during the department of trade and industry's gambling review commission in Parliament earlier this week.

Commission chairperson Astrid Ludibn said given the limited demand and the problems associated with dog racing, the commission did not think it should be legalised.

Research done by the NSPCA had proved that dog racing was highly problematic, James said.

It was prone to abuse and produced vast numbers of surplus animals.

"This led to our considered stance, to oppose the reintroduction and legalisation of dog racing," she said.

"The NSPCA has invested a great deal of time, effort and passion into protecting the animals involved with dog racing."

James said anyone who knows of dog racing taking place should report it to the police.
