Killing a Pesky Fly
Anonymous Letter to the Editor, Dawn.com
The commander-in-chief of the US military went to war on June 16 and destroyed the enemy single-handedly.
This time the enemy did not belong to Al Qaeda or any of the other militant groups but one that had wings, made a buzzing sound and was airborne. No, it wasn’t an adversary’s drone either.
Guess what? It was – a housefly! According to a report (June 18), while giving a TV interview to the CNBC, President Barack Obama got irritated by the ‘insecta non grata’ that had gate-crashed into the East Room of the Executive Mansion.
At first, he said to the persistent fly: “Get out of here.” When it didn’t oblige, he waited for the opponent to settle down, put his hand up and then smacked the fly dead in one try. Turning to the interviewer he remarked, “That was pretty impressive, wasn’t it? I got the sucker.”
At his invitation, the CNBC crew filmed the lifeless fly and made it historical.
There is a Zen aphorism, which says:
To her lover a beautiful woman is a delight;
To a monk she is a distraction;
To a mosquito a good meal.
One isn’t aware of a similar adage about a housefly or how the one in question looked upon the athletic American president, but he obviously saw it as a distraction.
As a law graduate, he could have chosen to take his nemesis to court for disturbing the presidential peace.
However, his c-in-c’s spirit apparently got provoked and he decided to use force, with devastating result for the foe.
Anyway, it may be interesting for Mr Obama to hear of my experience.
Until a couple of years back I used to employ an insecticide or swat the insects, albeit sparingly, because taking any form of life would trouble my conscience.
One day the inner reproach became overpowering, so I decided to stop killing them.
And, believe it or not, the ants, flies, mosquitoes and the occasional other intruders soon started to stay away from me and, often, my home.
It was a lesson derived from Sufism and worked for me beautifully. My conscience is now completely at ease.
