Victory for Kittens at University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center

From Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM)
July 2012

OUHSC now joins the 95 percent of U.S. pediatrics programs exclusively using nonanimal education methods.

Live kittens no longer endure painful procedures in the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center’s pediatrics residency intubation training. Thanks to PCRM and allies in Oklahoma, kittens were replaced with human-based medical simulation.

PCRM first asked Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) faculty and administrators to stop the use of kittens eight months ago. A local PCRM physician and the Central Oklahoma Humane Society also got involved and sent letters asking OUHSC to stop this cruel practice.

Pediatrics training at OUHSC previously involved repeatedly forcing a plastic tube through the mouths and into the windpipes of live kittens. The animals can suffer tracheal bruising, bleeding, scarring, severe pain, and they are at risk of death. In 2010, a kitten died at OUHSC one day after being used in a training lab.
