An Illinois pig farm has agreed to pay more than $80,000 in fines to the state Department of Natural Resources for spilling over 200,000 gallons of manure in a creek near the city of Buckley.

In July of 2009, a manure holding pond at the farm spilled into Spring Creek and a tributary, flowing downstream for 19 miles. The ecological disaster is responsible for killing close to 110,000 fish. However, these types of incidents are anything but uncommon.

Back in June of 1990, Smithfield-Carroll was fined $7,000 for numerous violations, two of which included damaging manure spills.

In 1995, 25 million gallons of hog waste from Oceanview Farms spilled into North Carolina's New River after an eight-acre, 12ft. deep receptacle collapsed.

In 1997, Smithfield Foods and two of its subsidiaries were charged $12.6 million for discharging illegal levels of pollutants from their Virginia slaughterhouses into the Pagan River.
