On September 8, “Meatopia” will take place at Randall’s Island Park in
New York City, and is proudly being sponsored by Whole Foods. This so-called
“Woodstock of Edible Animals," welcomes chefs from all over the globe for a
chance to compete and showcase their very best meat recipes for a chance to
stand on the Meatopia stage.
There seems to be an intense itinerary of meat-filled activities to keep
visitors busy, with events such as the “best butcher contest” taking place
on disturbingly named streets, such as Carcass Hill, The Deckle District,
Offalwood, and the Meatopia County Game Reserve.
According to the meatopia website, all of the meat used is going to be
antibiotic, hormone, and…cruelty free.
Is the slaughtering of animals ever free from cruelty? Hardly.
Does celebrating the killing of animals just for a taste, and hosting the
event on such a grandeur scale debunk Whole Foods stance on caring about the
environment? It would make a lot more sense if the company sponsored an
event that was environmentally friendly, and did not blatantly ignore the
detrimental effects caused by the negative impact of slaughtering animals.
Now more than ever, it is time to advocate in favor of a plant-based diet;
let’s just hope Whole Foods catches on and realizes that veganism is the
future!
