November 21 - Colt Dead at Del Mar, Filly at Aqueduct

2-year-old Lyrical Passage is dead after suffering what Jay Privman of the Daily Racing Form calls an “awful fracture” in the 5th yesterday at Del Mar. The equine child becomes the first racing kill of the Fall Meet, third (at least) overall.

In NY, Our Sweet Lilly, also just two, is dead after breaking down while training Friday at Aqueduct (Gaming Commission). She was being prepped for her first race.

November 20 - Two Dead in Del Mar’s First Week

Del Mar is back for its 15-day “Bing Meet” – and horses are still dying. The Stewards Minutes for 11/7-11/13 report two “deceased” – names, of course, withheld. “Cool As Ever” Del Mar, you may remember, lost at least 21 “athletes” this past summer.

November 19 - “Distress,” Then Death

In the 6th Wednesday at Finger Lakes, Zingarella was reported (Equibase) as “appeared in distress…vanned off.” This morning we learn (Gaming Commission) that the 3-year-old was euthanized the following day. The race was her 19th consecu

tive “maiden claiming”; prior to going into “distress,” she was “For Sale” at $5,000.

November 18 - A Kill at Delta Downs

To its credit, I suppose, Delta Downs in Louisiana is one of only two or three tracks in the entire country that spell out kills in the race notes. Ridiculously terse, but disclosed nonetheless. From the 4th last night: “WEALWAYSHAVE PARIS forced the early pace from the outside, was pulled up after a half and euthanized.”

Wealwayshave Paris – made, March 4, 2011; killed, November 17, 2016.

November 16 - 2 More for the Horse Pit

The California Horse Racing Board has reported the death of 2-year-old Lovely Kitten October 28 at Golden Gate: “showed signs of ATAXIA over a two week period and had progressively gotten worse…after consultation with owner, trainer and DVM, it was decided to euthanize her.”

The NYS Gaming Commission has reported the death of 3-year-old Surreal Dream November 5 at Finger Lakes: “treated for septicemia of unknown origin without any improvement – euthanized.”

While the deaths of both of these pubescent horses will be filed under “non-racing,” make no mistake, Racing – the industry – is wholly and unequivocally responsible.
