Dog and Cat Food
A normally carnivorous companion animal or "pet" can be converted to a vegetarian or vegan diet.  This type of diet can extend the lives of both cats and dogs and save millions of other animals each year.

New Vegan Cat Food in North America

Downbound.com becomes the first retailer to import AMI GMO-Free Vegan Cat Kibble from Italy

Our compassion for all animals is expressed by living a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle, which results in calling no animals food. However, feeding our animal companions a vegan or vegetarian diet may seem like a more complicated issue. After all, animal companions are like children in that they are completely dependent on us for their every need, and perhaps we shouldn't impose our ethics on them. This concern comes from an implicit understanding that veganism and vegetarianism are ethical decisions, okay for consenting adult humans, but not okay for non-consenting animals who wouldn't choose those diets in a "natural" scenario.

In the wild, cats would eat a carnivorous diet consisting mostly of small birds and mice (unfortunately for the birds and mice!). But our cat companions do not live in the wild, and "natural" has become living indoors with humans. Cats are built to be carnivores, and cannot synthesize certain nutrients, like taurine and Vitamin A from a typical vegan diet. However, since our cat companions are lucky enough to have human homes as their natural environment, they are privy to all the wonders of human ingenuity and technology. Just like humans, cats can live long, happy, and extremely healthy lives on high-quality specially formulated vegan food.

Until now, the only commercially available vegan cat kibble available in North America has been Evolution Diet. Now, in addition to carrying Evolution Diet, Downbound.com has become the first retailer in North America to carry AMI GMO-Free Vegan Cat Kibble. It is produced in Italy, and its introduction to North America marks an exciting milestone in the diversity of vegan cat food brands available here.

AMI was founded by Prof. Michele Ghezzo, who has been a vegetarian since 1983. The AMI GMO-Free Vegan Cat Food Kibble formula is the result of over 15 years of university-based nutritional research, sponsored by Michele Ghezzo. His research into finding alternatives to animal-based pet food ingredients began in 1985 at the University of Bologna, and continued in the 1990s at the University of Padova (both in Italy). All research conducted was strictly based on discovering the ideal non-animal nutrients to fulfill the known nutritional needs of cats, and involved zero animal subjects.

Prof. Michele Ghezzo is also the founder and president of the Franca Melchiori Fasan Foundation, which cares for and advocates on behalf of over 900 feral cats in Italy. All of these cats are fed AMI GMO-Free Vegan Cat Food Kibble. Michele is also an official advisor to the Italian Parliament on matters relating to legislation that affects animals.

AMI GMO-Free Vegan Cat Food Kibble is 100% nutritionally complete for cats of all life stages. It has a higher protein content than Evolution "Gourmet Pasta" Vegan Cat Kibble (33% vs. 30%). It is enriched with synthetically produced taurine, which cats cannot synthesize on their own. And all ingredients are certified to be GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) Free. AMI independently conducts laboratory tests on samples of all of its raw ingredients to confirm their GMO-Free status.

As for imposing our ethics on our animal companions, Downbound.com suggests that we also consider the morality of imposing our ethics on cows, chickens, pigs, fish, and other animals who could easily become the unwilling central attractions on our animal companions' dinner dishes. With perfectly healthy vegan alternatives for cats available at Downbound.com, we can care wonderfully for our loving companions, while not exploiting the rights of other less fortunate animals.

Downbound.com was launched in February 2005 by Adam Wilson, who also founded the Toronto Animal Rights Society in 2002. He has been a vegan since 1996. Downbound.com is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and ships to customers throughout North America. It carries a wide selection of dog and cat food items and treats, as well as over 200 organic no-sweatshop hemp clothing, accessory, and footwear items. The word Downbound signifies an ideological shift down the corporate ladder, down the food chain, and down to earth.
