Time to support Lynn Rogers as DNR threatens to end research

By Letter to the editor from Paul Caspers, Ely, Minn.

The Timberjay Newspapers
Wednesday, June 25, 2001908 Volume 19, Issue 22

Dr. Lynn Rogers, founder of the Wildlife Research Institute and more recently, the North American Bear Center, is one of the preeminent bear researchers in the world. He has written more than 100 scientific articles about his research. He and our part of the world have been featured prominently in films like The Man Who Walks With Bears.

Two years ago a French film crew documented his work. From now until October a BBC film crew is in town creating a documentary about his findings. These films advertise the beauty of our region, educate millions of people about bears and encourage tourism.

So why is the Minnesota DNR reviewing a proposal to rescind permission for Rogers to carry out his research or to burden him with onerous requirements to continue? Why does the DNR refuse to protect radio-collared bears? Allow Lynn to continue his research. The DNR decision could come as early as the end of June. You can express your concerns by writing to:

Commissioner Mark Holsten

St. Paul, MN 55155

Thanks.
