There are two primary things we have to keep in mind when reading the Bible and understanding it:
1. The Bible is a historical as well as an instructional document for living in the creation and heavenly will of God. Essentially all of the historical accounts, including the things you mentioned are about this corrupt earth and God trying to lead people back to His creation and heavenly will where there is no suffering and death. In the process, He is trying to limit their evilness. We refer to these things as concessions.
2. Human beings try to twist God's meaning and intent in order to try to justify their evil ways that cause pain and suffering to other living beings, and destruction of His beautiful creation. We are not to listen to them. So anything that is not compassionate and loving is not in God's will.
