This is another one of those questions that is presented to distract us from our mission of ending the suffering of animals and to try to justify their own hardness of heart and indifference to the atrocities committed upon animals.
Over 50 billion so-called “food” animals don’t just happen every year. They are bred by humans for the sole purpose of killing them.
It's obvious that such a change would not happen overnight, but over a period of years, and as the demand for flesh and other animal products declined, so would the breeding of animals go down until there were only a few left.
There is absolutely no excuse for killing and eating animals.
