“We spend more than any country on medicine, yet we're the unhealthiest – that’s ridiculous!” said Garth Davis, M.D., a bariatric surgeon who admits he’s trying to put himself out of business.

A deficiency in nutrition education is plaguing our country’s health professionals. At a Capitol Hill briefing on April 4, doctors offered a prescription: the EAT for Health and ENRICH Acts, two new bills that will boost nutrition education for current and future physicians, respectively.

Partnering with Reps. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., and Tim Ryan, D-Ohio—the two bills’ sponsors—the Physicians Committee hosted an expert panel discussion on the importance of nutrition education for our country’s doctors and other health care professionals.

“With U.S. health care expenditures continuing to rise to unprecedented levels, we must do everything in our power to improve Americans’ diets,” said Rep. Tim Ryan, who provided opening remarks at the briefing.

“We need to raise awareness and reduce our risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes that are plaguing our nation and are directly connected with diet and lifestyle choices.”

“We have a problem with overreliance on medication for diabetes. We need to teach nutrition for disease management,” echoed Caroline Trapp, M.S.N., C.D.E., nurse practitioner, and Physicians Committee director of diabetes education and care.

Martin Kohlmeier, M.D., Ph.D., nutrition researcher, and author of numerous nutrition education materials, and Charlotte Pratt, Ph.D., R.D., National Institutes of Health, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), spoke about the need to improve nutrition education for those on the front lines of the fight against chronic disease.

The Education and Training (EAT) for Health Act, sponsored by Rep. Grijalva, ensures that federally employed physicians and nurse practitioners receive six hours of continuing education in nutrition annually.

The Expanding Nutrition’s Role in Curriculums and Healthcare (ENRICH) Act, a bipartisan bill sponsored by Rep. Ryan and Rep. Bill Cassidy, R-La, establishes a $15 million competitive grant program to help medical schools incorporate nutrition into their curricula.
