Never Look a Trojan Gift Cow in the Mouth

America's dairy industry has also been under siege of late, and the one bright story proudly shared by dairy farmers is how the American consumer has fallen in love with a new dairy product, Greek-style yogurt. This single product is saving New York State's milk industry.

"By their own follies they perished, the fools."
- Homer, The Odyssey

Residents of ancient Troy celebrated when one thousand ships sailed from their shores back to Athens and Sparta and other Greek cities to end the Trojan war. Agamemnon and Menelaus, Achilles and Odysseus and tens of thousands of Greek warriors had abandoned their long siege to leave a gift-horse in tribute to Troy's resolve.

America's dairy industry has also been under siege of late, and the one bright story proudly shared by dairy farmers is how the American consumer has fallen in love with a new dairy product, Greek-style yogurt. This single product is saving New York State's milk industry.

While Troy partied, Greek soldiers waited silently within the belly of the monumental beast and then emerged to slay the designated non-drinking guards. While Troy slept off their massive hangovers, the ships returned and the city of Troy died.

Greek-style yogurt is the Trojan Horse of our 21st century food supply. Traditional yogurt is drained of its liquid base so that the resulting yogurt becomes thick and clotted. The new Yogurt treat has less water and more protein, which is not such a good thing. The new yogurt contains proportionally more growth hormones, and as per capita use of Greek Yogurt increases, so too will America's obesity epidemic.

It gets worse. Much worse. The process of manufacturing this new thickened yogurt product results in the production of an acidic liquid which dairy producers are unable to pour into lakes under threat of regulatory fines, or down drains, or onto the ground. The new liquid creation is toxic, and manufacturers are offering it free to dairy farmers who mix it with feed in hopes of fattening their farm animals. Some dairymen have found out the hard way that too much acid whey mixed with traditional feed can destroy a cow's digestive system.

Chobani does not sell it. They cannot give all of it "a-whey" and their solution for the solution is to pay farmers to take the liquid acid whey off their hands.

"Every problem has a gift for you in its hands."
- Richard Bach
