Editor's note: The Food and Drug Administration has approved Actemra for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Genentech, Inc. announced this week. There is no cure for the health condition though. We posted an article below for those who may be interested in alternative ways to manage their disease.

Eating a gluten free vegan diet may help patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a study in Arthritis Research & Therapy has suggested.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic inflammatory disease which affects multiple joints of the body. The vegan diet was found to be atheroprotective and anti-inflammatory.

Elkan AC and colleagues from Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, found the gluten free vegan diet induced lower their body mass index, and low-density lipoprotein and higher anti-PC IgM than the control diet.

The study involved 66 patients at an average age of 50 years with active rheumatoid arthritis with 38 assigned a gluten free vegan diet and 28 given a well-balanced non-vegan diet for one year.

Like many other diseases, rheumatoid arthritis cure does not exist although rheumatoid arthritis treatments are available to help manage the health condition.

Rheumatoid arthritis treatment options include drugs, joint stress management, physical and occupational therapy, and surgical intervention.
