A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Fur and Deception - 15 Feb 2006
By Mary T. Hoffman

My last two Blogs have been about “the wearing of fur belonging to other animals.” Why do I express myself in this way? Well, many years ago, while in a local bank, I happened to be wearing a “don’t wear fur” badge. One of the bankers mockingly said something to the effect that “animals wear fur.” He thought he was being so clever!

Why my title, “Fur and Deception”? A few weeks ago a professional acquaintance of ours, knowing our beliefs, came to our home. She was wearing what was obviously an animal-derived fur collar. Neither Frank nor I said anything to her about it that day. A few days later Frank, in speaking to her, politely mentioned her wearing of fur. She claimed it was “faux fur.” However, at our next meeting, she had removed the fur collar from her coat.

Why do I mention this? Simply put: If she can lie so easily, I wonder if she can be trusted. As I mentioned in yesterday’s Blog, I wore fur long ago, too; but I never would have lied about it. Wearing fur is bad enough, but lying about it is even worse.

Lying perpetuates wrongdoing and delays change. Change comes about through facing the truth.
