A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

“But even the compassion of the wicked is cruel.” – 30 Apr 2006
By Mary T. Hoffman

Seems like every time I turn around I see more exploitation of animals by people who claim to “love animals” and who should know better! For example, on a local bulletin board a breeder is advertising pedigreed puppies for $3000.00 each. And what about the self-indulgent woman on TV who just “loves” her doggie whom she brags cost her a lot of money.

It’s getting worse and worse: special experimental breeds, fad dogs (remember the Dalmatian craze after the movie about Dalmatians?), cloned animals…. These animals (cats included) are treated as commodities: good specimens are sold, while poor specimens are disposed of, like so much garbage.

You would think that in this day and age, people finally would realize that there are thousands of dogs and cats, including special breeds, who are homeless. However, these probably are also the people who play right into the hands of the abusers and refuse to look at “unpleasant” photos of animal cruelty. And what about all the people who claim to “love animals” but are very quick to disassociate themselves from “those animal rightists”?

How can these people claim to “love” their “pet” yet ignore the plight of other animals that they are directly or indirectly (by their everyday choices of food, clothing, etc.) causing to live in a hell on earth?

And while I’m on the subject of the exploitation of animals, there are so many horse-breeding farms springing up around here. Well, you get the picture!

I’ll end this Blog with this scripture from the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament):

Proverbs 12:10

10. A righteous man [woman] has regard for his [her] animal.

But even the compassion of the wicked is cruel.
