"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Bill Moyers – 25 June 2006

Last Friday I watched “Bill Moyers on Faith and Reason,” a new, one-hour-long PBS offering that their monthly guide describes this way: “Moyers explores the ideas of leading thinkers on the relationship between religious fundamentalism and democracy, equality and human rights.”

My opinion? It was great! I actually had enormous fun listening to Bill Moyers and his guest Salman Rushdie! At last – a TV program that gives one’s brain cells a bit of a workout.

There was even a little curmudgeonly humor as Salman Rushdie described the message on a tombstone: Thank God, I died an atheist.

Rushdie mentioned that it is likely that people’s sense of right and wrong preceded man-made religion. Hearing this, I made the connection to Romans 1:20:

20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

Having enjoyed the premier of this new weekly series, I look forward to more televised conversations between Bill Moyers and his guests.
