A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Re-introduction of Animals: A Bad Idea – 25 July 2006
By Mary T. Hoffman

“Re-introduction” or “restoration” (or whatever you want to call it) of animals is a bad idea. There! I’ve said it! Every time I hear about wolves or pandas or what-have-you being “re-introduced” in an area where their numbers have dwindled, I think, “Here they go again, interfering instead of leaving well enough alone.” How arrogant of people to play games (or play God) with other animals’ lives!

And after the re-introduced animals begin to multiply, they are seen as a threat – as in the case of wolves and cattle ranchers.

I do not support any re-introduction or restoration of animals, nor do I support any sort of zoo. And the whole idea of breeding animals in zoos is disgusting. The commercialization of these animals: all the buying and selling, and the use of the babies as an attraction, is reprehensible. In any such business, there is behind-the-scenes suffering.

I look forward to the day when animals have legal rights and their boundaries are recognized. Human beings should take care of their own problems and stop meddling with God’s creatures. Haven’t people made enough of a mess of this earth?
