Penguins – 26 November 2006
Last night we watched the much-publicized “March of the Penguins”
on TV. As educational and touching as this program is, I couldn’t help
but think how these beautiful animals have become fodder for
commercial exploiters, three of which aired their ads during
commercial breaks. In a short, behind the scenes feature showing the
crew who did the photography for this film, curious penguins were
shown approaching the people. These intelligent animals, who survive
in the harshest environment on earth, had no fear of the humans.
Unfortunately, the penguin becomes just another “cute” animal to
capture the public imagination for a while before they’re replaced by
another “poster animal.” Remember the Dalmatians? They were all the rage
for a while, and the breeders “made a killing” in more ways than one!
(“Defective” dogs are just trash to exploiters.)
Humans can’t keep their grubby hands off anything that they can
exploit and penguins are no exception.

"Joyful Curmudgeon"
An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful. At the
same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the
world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true
peace and compassion.Blog
