Spaying and neutering animals is good for animals and for people.
There are many reasons for this. The obvious one is that it prevents
the pain and abuse suffered by unwanted animals, whether they are
“strays” or not.
It is amazing how in this day and age there are people who are so
irresponsible that they refuse to have their “pets” spayed or neutered.
I still see those ads in the paper that should have gone out of
existence long ago: “Free puppies (or kittens) to good home.” Are some
people so naïve that they offer these innocent creatures to others who
will see their ad and call? Who knows what these animals will be used
for? There are all kinds of weirdoes out there, and they don’t wear a
sign proclaiming the fact.
Then there are “religious” people who let their companion animals
proliferate, refusing to have them spayed or neutered. I have even
offered to pay for the spaying and neutering and was shocked when my
offer was refused. It doesn’t make any sense. It is one thing for humans
to refuse to curtail their own reproduction on religious grounds; but to
allow their animals to reproduce when they themselves eat animals and
don’t even believe that animals have souls or rights of any sort – I
find that totally illogical, to say the least.
I was glad when the Postal Department came out with a Spay and Neuter
stamp. That was a step in the right direction. There are groups working
very hard to end the horrible suffering of strays in other countries by
promoting spaying and neutering. These people deserve lots of support
and encouragement for actually doing something about this problem.
