"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful. At the same
time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel
called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.
Former President Gerald R. Ford is one of two Presidents whom I saw and heard in person; the other was Ronald Reagan.
Yesterday I watched our 38th President’s televised funeral which was held in Grand Rapids, Michigan; and I was deeply moved by the service held in Grace Episcopal Church. The touching eulogies by Donald Rumsfeld and former President Jimmy Carter described a truly good man. The Bible readings, the prayers, the hymns – all were all so inspiring. The last hymn sung as the flag-draped coffin was carried out of the church was the beautiful “Majesty and Power,” the first line of which is “A mighty fortress is our God...”
Maybe I’m being too sentimental, but I couldn’t help but think how wonderful it would be if present-day politicians could learn to be a bit more like Gerald Ford was.
