A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

The Amazon – 13 January 2007
By Mary T. Hoffman

The January 2007 National Geographic magazine features an article that is a real eye-opener – “Last of the Amazon.” The following statement is printed under the title: “In the time it takes to read this article, an area of Brazil’s rain forest larger than 200 football fields will have been destroyed.”

Under a photo of cattle and cowboys on horses is this statement: “Cowboys herd prime assets: Beef exports earn Brazil three billion dollars a year. With cattle numbers now topping 60 million, the demand for new pastureland drives much deforestation.”

Besides cattle and logging of hardwoods that is hastening this deforestation, there is the increasing production of soybeans exported to be used for animal feed and oil.

For years I’ve been hearing about “the destruction of the rainforest”; but until I read this article, I never really understood the extent of the criminality involved – the land-grabbing, killings, fires, etc.

It appears that by moving further and further away from God’s teachings, the human race is in a hurry to destroy itself and all whom God entrusted to their stewardship.
