A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Being Led Astray and Loving It – 31 January 2007
By Mary T. Hoffman

It seems as though everywhere one turns there is talk about “healthy,” “natural,” or “organic” this or that; but when we go grocery shopping it is obvious that the truly healthful foods are lost in a sea of packaged products that are anything but health-promoting.

For all the talk about the negative consequences of consuming “trans fats,” “high fructose corn syrup,” and “empty calories,” a walk through the aisles of a supermarket proves that it is mostly just that – talk. Add to that “the graveyard” aka “the meat department” shamelessly selling “live lobsters” and parts of corpses, and one has a market made to order for those who choose to ignore the truth about their own health as well as the horrible suffering that they perpetuate by purchasing animal products.

God created a variety of plant foods for humans to enjoy (Genesis 1:29):

29 Then God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;” ~New American Standard Bible

Yet the “average person” resists God’s loving advice and, instead, listens to and follows those who desire only to profit from such self-imposed ignorance. They follow the purveyors of human-made products which contain manipulated and health-corrupting ingredients. This is exactly what we witnessed in the supermarket yesterday when the man ahead of us in the check-out line spent 64 dollars for only processed “foods” without buying a single God-created plant food.

This resistance to the truth so obvious in the “average person” today reminds me of a Bible passage in which the prophet Jeremiah describes the hold that the “authorities” had on the people of his day who, likewise, chose to ignore the truth and to follow their exploiters (Jeremiah 5:30-31):

30 "An appalling and horrible thing
Has happened in the land:

31 The prophets prophesy falsely,
And the priests rule on their own authority;
And My [God’s] people love it so!
But what will you do at the end of it?
~New American Standard Bible
