A thought-provoking article that appeared in a Methodist paper
linked the word “salvation” with the word “wellness” – wellness of the
body, mind and spirit. The writer rightfully emphasized the importance
of finding ways to minister to the whole person.
He wrote about the way that the word “wellness” is used mostly in
conjunction with the physical: gyms, hospitals, and long-term care
facilities are fond of using this word that has grown in popularity
lately.
It’s easy to see that someone who is able to get around physically,
has his/her mental faculties intact, and is truly “saved” spiritually
will be in a better position to offer counseling to others that leads to
the comfort found in belief in the Savior.
While being born again in spirit is essential for eternal life, while
we are still in these bodies, the physical and mental should not be
dismissed as unimportant. Indeed, in the Apostle Paul’s first letter to
the Corinthians (6:19-20) he says:
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit
who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in
your body.
~ New American Standard Bible
What better way to “glorify God in your body” than to live
healthfully and eat unprocessed foods selected from God’s original plan
for humans (Genesis 1:29), before the fall and resulting corruption:
29 Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every
plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every
tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you….”
~ New American Standard Bible
