A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Arrogance – 1 July 2007
By Mary T. Hoffman

The other day we received in the mail a slick ad for a magazine that boasts of having billionaires, world leaders, and “captains of industry” as readers. Printed on the large envelope, along with the usual “free trial issues and free gift” enticements and topic headings designed to catch the reader’s attention, was this disturbing statement: “Time to get rid of a few species.”

If I had any intention of subscribing to this weekly publication, this one statement dispelled any illusion I may have had that this was a magazine I would want to support in any way.

It is this arrogance and hardness of heart that continues to corrupt and destroy the earth. The mention of “captains of industry” as readers brought to mind the Revelation to John of the Bible where God pronounces judgment on “kings of the earth” and “merchants…who became rich from her [Babylon]” and “were the great men of the earth.” (Revelation 18)

To the few who are discerning, the insensitivity of the arrogant gives them away for what they really are – even with a statement like “Time to get rid of a few species.” Just as Satan was puffed up with self-importance and wanted to be God, they want to play God by destroying His creation for money.
