A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Vegan Organic – 7 August 2007
By Mary T. Hoffman

“Is This the New Organic?” and “Veganic in Ithaca New York” are the titles of two wonderful articles in the Summer 2007 issue of American Vegan.

Reading these articles renewed my hope that veganic (vegan organic) farming will become popular in this country. The United Kingdom already has a Vegan Organic certification process called “Stockfree Organic.”

The reason I have not been very enthusiastic about organically grown produce is because I realize that animal manure and slaughterhouse by-products such as blood, fish, and bone meal are used as fertilizers. The fact that organics depend on the meat industry also makes me question the safety of the food grown. We know about E. coli and mad cow disease, but what about pathogens that may yet emerge? Besides, I don’t want to contribute in any way to the cruelty and suffering represented by animal-derived products.

For anyone wanting to learn more about vegan organic (veganic) farming, the book Growing Green: Animal-Free Organic Techniques by Jenny Hall and Iain Tolhurst 2007, 328pp 6X9” $35.00, is available from the American Vegan Society:
