Coral Reefs – 22 January 2008
Fifty-five percent of the coral reefs of 49 countries are over
fished, according to a study. Mainland China’s rapidly expanding
market for reef fish is supplied mostly by Hong Kong traders. Since
reef fish take 5 to 10 years to reach breeding age, they are very
vulnerable. Coral is destroyed by the cyanide that is used to capture
the fish alive, and 75 percent of these fish die before they reach the
markets.
In addition to cyanide fishing, people are responsible for the
destruction of coral reefs through pollution, sewage, erosion, and
increased tourism in precarious sites. When it comes to “saving” the
“environment” or “wildlife,” isn’t it interesting that the majority of
humans and the organizations they support are motivated only by
selfishness? They want to have more nonhuman victims to kill for fun and
to feed their gluttony and/or their egos. Where are the kindness,
gentleness, and compassion that Jesus preached?

"Joyful Curmudgeon"
An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful. At the
same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the
world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true
peace and compassion.Blog
