A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Mandatory Alternatives Petition (MAP) – 2 February 2008
By Mary T. Hoffman

The Mandatory Alternatives Petition (MAP) is a citizen suit petition filed with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting that the agency mandate the use of scientifically proven non-animal methods for testing drugs and medical devices. More than 100 groups are included in the coalition whose members signed this important petition that asks the FDA to assert leadership in advancing drug testing from archaic and unreliable animal methods to scientifically sound and humane methods.

Animal testing methods can be inaccurate and extremely cruel, resulting in the approval of hazardous drugs that cause harm to millions of people around the world. More reliable testing methods are available, and many more are in development, which can produce safer and more effective drugs than current animal testing methods.

European law requires that animal tests may not be used when validated non-animal alternatives are available. The U.S. does not have such a law, but the FDA has the authority to change the way drugs and medical devices are tested.
