"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful. At the same
time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel
called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.
Today, the 1st of May, ushers in International Respect for Chickens Month, and Sunday May 4, 2008 is International Respect for Chickens Day. Please visit www.upc-online.org to learn how you can help promote respect and kindness to chickens, who are the most horribly abused of all animals and in the greatest numbers, even though they are cheerful, intelligent birds. A mother hen tenderly cares for her chicks, and roosters protect their families and flocks.
Hens are such good mothers that over 2,000 years ago Jesus said, “How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings…” (Luke 13:34) And in the 16th century Ulisse Aldrovandi said this about chicken mothers: “They would rather die for their chicks than seek safety in flight…”
Obviously, there is no excuse for what amounts to extreme criminal abuse of these animals whom human parents would do well to emulate.
