A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Flag Day – 14 June 2008
By Mary T. Hoffman

When I was a young girl in public school, our day would begin with the teacher and the class standing up, right hand over heart, while reciting The Pledge to the American Flag. We would then sit down, and a Bible verse would be read to us.

The Pledge to the American Flag was first recited by public-school children during the National School Celebration of October 21, 1892. The Second National Flag Conference set down the official words for the pledge in 1924, as follows:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands; one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

On June 14, 1954 (Flag Day), President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill into law that approved the addition of the words “under God” to the Pledge:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
