"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful. At the same
time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel
called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.
Today marks the beginning of International Respect for Chickens Month; and May 4th of this year is International Respect for Chickens Day.
I think it is appropriate that May is also the month when Mother’s Day is celebrated, since chickens are such good mothers. In fact, in the 16th century Ulisse Aldrovandi had this to say about chickens: “They would rather die for their chicks than seek safety in flight…”
And 2000 years ago, Jesus said: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.” (Matthew 23:37 and Luke 13:34)
Human parents would do well to emulate these cheerful intelligent birds. Mother hens tenderly care for their chicks, and roosters protect their families and flocks.
