Stop Killing Deer
Another city bites the dust. Yours next? Do something!
Fellow activists:
If you oppose deer-culling as
a solution to human-deer conflict problems, especially when
non-violent integrated solutions are available, read on. It
could be coming to a city near you, even yours. Witness the cae
below, which came to my attention this morning. Now,
Montana is added to the lengthy list of
Ohio, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut, Colorado
and Iowa, among others.
City commissioners
pass deer policy
Queen City News, Helena, Montana
Wednesday, June 06, 2007
All but one city commissioner voted Monday night for
a management plan designed to reduce the mule deer
population in Helena, even if it means killing most of
them. The only holdout was Sandy Oitzinger, who made
several unsuccessful motions to amend the plan.
If the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission
approves the policy developed by an Urban Wildlife Task
Force, the city could contract with sharpshooters to
dispatch more than 300 of Helenas estimated 500 urban
deer later this year.
Opinions among Helenans are split on what to do about
the deer, with some finding them dangerous while others
are merely annoyed at what they can do to expensive
landscaping and flower and vegetable gardens.
The task forces proposed policy also suggests that
Helena put some money into managing the deer and into
educating the public on how to better co-exist with
them.

In view of this, I have
added Montana to my upcoming 25-states-in-4-months
Compassion for Animals Road Expedition #5
(CARE-5, also known as the
Deer Tour). This means that I will
have to bypass Colorado in the beginning of the tour, though it
could be included at the end of the tour, after Texas. The
itinerary now looks like this:

For those who are not
familiar with the deer-culling problem and/or the Deer Tour,
please see the Deer
section of
www.HOPE-CARE.org. In brief, I will be holding a series of
seminars from city to city, titled:
Non-Violent Human-Deer Co-Existence Strategy
This is not just a
presentation, but also a rap session and work shop as well.
By the end of the seminar, there will
emerge a specific strategy for that city, including,
if feasible, the use of the amazing technology called the
Deer Auto-Conveyor (DAC)
There are two types of
DACs - the Static DAC and the Dynamic DAC. Both can relocate
deer without the need of capture, tranquilization or transport,
i.e. neither would involve harassment of any kind. By the
structure of the DAC, deer relocate themselves under their own
steam.
I hope to see you while on Deer
tour.
