Dear Prime Minister Howard:
In honouring the loss of Steve Irwin, a state funeral is of oucrse
appropriate, but may I propose something even better in addition.
Not long ago, during an interview by Larry King, Steve expressed strong
opposition to Japanese whaling (1,400 per year of 6-7 species, about 1,000
of which from the Southern Ocean) and the Canadian seal massacre (325,000
a year off the Newfoundland coast, a single file of which would stretch
350 km along a highway). If we were to ask Steve for his dying wish on
these issues in regards to Autralian policy, I have no doubt he would ask
your government to take active measures against both of these crimes
against nature.
Therefore, I ask you, on Steve's behalf, to
1. take direct and active measures in opposing the Japanese pillage of
the Southern Whale Sanctuary. No Australian should forget the treatment of
your POWs by the Japanese during WW2, and tolerate the same treatment
perpetrated by the Japanese on our brethren of the oceans. And
2. ban all importation of Canadian seal products. Several countries,
e.g. the U.S. and Italy, have already taken this step, and other nations,
e.g. Belgium, is on the way of doing so.
Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,
Anthony Marr, founder
