Public cooling on global warming - campaign more urgent than ever
The news this morning (see the 2 articles below) of declining public
interest and support for facing up to the climate change challenges
especially when it involves personal sacrifices, combined with the rapidly
closing window of opportunity for aggressively doing so (3 years max), mean
that the planned worldwide outreach campaign for 2009-2010 of the Global
Emergency Operation (GEO) of Heal Our Planet Earth (HOPE) is more important
and urgent than ever. Governments won't go an inch farther than where the
public push them to go, and of course the corporations are rubbing their
hands in glee given the resurgent public ignorance and apathy.
On the highest political level, there are two major climate change
conventions we have to keep our eyes on and influence to the maximum extent
possible: the UN climate talks in Poznan, Poland, Dec. 11-12, 2008, and the
one in Copenhagen, Denmark - the successor of Kyoto - in Dec. 2009. These
are the only two global climate change conventions within this 3-year window
of opportunity. As it is, judging by their agendas, they are already falling
short by only moderately addressing global warming by CO2 (just the fuse),
and all but ignoring runaway global heating by methane (the real time-bomb).
With lessening public pressure, world governments could only fall even
shorter. If we (our species) fail to hammer out a radical and binding global
solution in either or both conventions, we would have doomed our children
and millions of species with our own selfishness, shortsightedness and
hypocrisy, once and for all.
The HOPE-GEO strategy over the next two years comprises the following:
1. To create and publish a number of YouTube videos over the next two
months that will be seen by millions worldwide within a year (research is
now being conducted on how tactically and technically this target can be
met)
2. To create and publish a second book, this one concentrating on the
methane time-bomb which is 10,000X more powerful than all the nuclear
weapons combined, but is currently unknown to the public by and large, and
ignored by governments, corporations and even environmental NGOs.
3. For HOPE founder Anthony Marr to personally conduct a road tour of
USA/Canada by an 85-mpg vehicle (motorcycle) in the spring/summer of 2009,
then of Europe in the summer/fall of 2009 prior to the Copenhagen
convention, and, financing permitting, of Asia, Africa, AU/NZ and S/C
America by year-end 2010.
We have a blurry view of the Doomsday Clock which now appears to say
11:59, or worse, already past midnight. If we change course now, we might
still have a chance; if we don't we have none. If we give up and retreat
into being couch potatoes, we'd doom ourselves to watching our world
disintegrate each on our own flat-screen TVs, most within their current
lifetimes.
