38 dead "athletes," at one arena, in one 11+ month period. A sport? Only to the willfully ignorant and/or wicked.
The CHRB reports that one day before Give Me the Lute was killed at Los Alamitos, Lady Derby “collapsed while cooling out” (post race) there – "sudden death." That would be "sudden death" at the age of six – which is right about the time horses reach full maturity. This brings the total carnage at Los Alamitos this year to 38.

But that's not all. The CHRB also disclosed a death at Santa Anita Sunday. This particular victim was so young he/she hadn’t even been christened yet. With these three from the weekend, the state of California has now officially surpassed the century mark in dead racehorses in 2024. So much for all that safety and welfare talk.
