Letter to the Editor from Jenny Moxham: Christmas a sad time for many animals - 19 Dec 2007

Christmas a sad time for many animals
I, TOO, would have been moved to tears seeing a child’s dog killed by a car, The Advertiser ‘‘Children face a sad Christmas without pet,’’ December 6, but what saddens me even more is the Christmas killing that we don’t see - the merciless massacre of millions of turkeys, piglets and other animals that takes place behind closed doors.
Whereas the child’s dog would have experienced some happiness, these equally sensitive, intelligent animals are condemned to an entire lifetime of extreme brutality, suffering and pain culminating with a terrifying and agonising death at the slaughterhouse.
Christmas is meant to be a time of peace and goodwill on Earth yet the majority of people celebrate by participating in this wholesale massacre of their fellow creatures.
Does it make sense? Isn’t it totally inconsistent? There is an abundance of delicious, non-animal food readily available these days, so please consider celebrating Christmas this year in a truly peaceful and loving way - with no sad corpse on the dinner table.
