If youngsters were being encouraged to shove barbed hooks down the throats of the swans at Spavin Drive Lake then yank the birds aloft and slowly asphyxiate them, most people would rightly regard it as cruelty.
Yet, when youngsters are encouraged to shove barbed hooks down the throats of fish at this same lake (Castaway, 6/7) then yank them aloft and slowly asphyxiate them it is regarded as a fun activity.
Scientists have proved that fish feel pain in much the same way as birds and mammals thus, being hooked hurts them every bit as much as it would hurt you or me.
Isn't it time we 'took off our blinkers' and recognized angling for what it truly is - blatant, animal torture.
