In his zany opinion piece, “Fish have been baiting me for free ride,” Damien Bathersby jokingly suggests that small fish deliberately get hooked so that they can have a fast ride to the surface and get to go back for another go.
But is impaling fish on hooks really something to joke about?
Fish are not akin to apples and oranges even though many people treat them as though they are.
According to Victoria Braithwaite, Professor of Fisheries and Biology at Penn State University, the evidence that fish feel pain is as good as any that we have for birds and mammals. Research has shown that fish detect pain, act as though they are in pain, calm down if given pain killers and seek to avoid pain if they can.
Isn’t it time we all opened our eyed to the cruelty of fishing?
