The Coat

An Animal Rights Poem from

All of God's creatures have rights, a fact that most people don't seem to recognize. This includes both human and non-human animals, but not all of them can speak for themselves.

The Coat
By Kristen Sharer

How many lives were taken
by that fur coat that you wear?
Do you even think about it?
Or do you just not care?

Did it take them long to die?
Were they desperate to be free?
Did they gnaw on their own limbs?
Did they scream a frightened plea?

Were they creatures born to die?
All raised by human hand
that died while never living
the life that God had planned.

Do you still see any beauty
in all the blood you've shed?
That's not fashion on your shoulders,
it's a corpse; therefore, it's dead.
