Poems of compassion dedicated to the non-human animals who share this planet
with us and the people who fight for them.
Eyes, tissues, ears, brains
blasted out blood’s instant
the military sonar
and air gun drilling
search for gas and oil
(underwater rocket sounds)
in seismic bursts
diverting marine life dive patterns,
creating behavioral change
to become sea’s regurgitant
in the losses of whale—
Blue, Bowhead, Minke,
Fin, Humpback—
their once chorus of sounds
could be for hours on end
playing out in chirps, cries, pulses,
clicks, groans, trills, whistles
churning the losses
into seas of silences’
last forty years
half of marine life
now extinct.
