Poems of compassion dedicated to the non-human animals who share this planet
with us and the people who fight for them.
It’s all in the shoes—
kangaroo that is.
How Adidas, Nike,
New Balance, Puma,
etc., etc., etc.,
manufacture animals
of how there is no choice—
as in gone from the herd,
species to be killed,
40,000 every month,
three million yearly hunted,
hundreds of thousands
little ones taken down
into the millions too,
but the numbers
I cannot get straight,
my head, can’t think
of these details,
New South Wales,
where nights of killing
are what’s expected,
when the social roos
forage on grass
(babies in pouch),
having to stomp
for sounds of danger—
mob fear of death
we wear in our shoes.
