Poems of compassion dedicated to the non-human animals who share this planet
with us and the people who fight for them.
Sad Crops
By Heather Leughmyer
These crops are planted in sunless rows
Where no rain drops and no wind blows
Where ammonia chokes with every breath
The air is thick with dust and death.
These Crops are grown in secret spaces
Fields of steel line hidden places
Landscapes marred with lagoons of red
Deep and sticky, stagnant dread.
At harvest time these crops are ripped
Hung on hooks, sliced and shipped
To the freezer case at your local store
Politely packaged to mask the gore.
