Molly companion love

On this day when romantic love is celebrated, think of the other animals whose love for each other we sever, if we even allow it to begin. Think of the chicks who never see their mothers, the couples we separate, the families we break. Think of your own precious loves; that is the love we unthinkingly deprive others of when we are not vegan.

When Molly arrived at Eden she brought an exquisite love that melted the species barrier. This love is the bedrock of sanctuary at Eden; Molly laid its foundation stone.

Humans rarely love unconditionally. Our affection is restricted by species, appearance, intelligence or some other condition. We 'love' others when they are of use to us, or when they most resemble us. Our love is frequently not for the essence of the other but for the mere reflection in them of our own projected needs and desires.

Veganism is like unconditional love. It entails respecting all other lives, regardless of who or how they are, knowing that like us they want to be happy, and like us they do not want to suffer.

The world needs more unconditional love. It is a challenge that each of us has a responsibility to meet in our endeavour to make this world a better place for all lives.

Think of the dairy calves separated from their mothers so that we can drink their milk. Think of the Madison Monkeys, separated from their mothers so that we can observe what we already know about social isolation and the harm and fear that occur in the absence of love.

This film about love is in memory of Molly.

Thank you to all the Friends of Eden who wrote such comforting emails and messages following Molly's illness and death.
