In Memory of Rascal

I wept as I read of the last moments of Frankie’s life.
I too, laid down beside my little white cat, Rascal, during his last night on this earth. He had a cancerous tumor which could not be removed due to his age and emaciated state. In spite of my efforts, he had reached the stage where he no longer wished to eat and was too weak to stand. I had arranged with my vet to euthanize him the following morning and I could not bear to let him spend his last night on this earth without my being beside him, caressing him, and telling him how much I loved him.
The following morning my son and I took him to the vet. I cradled him in my arms with my son’s hand caressing his head as the vet injected the fluid that put him out of his misery and to rest. That was 8 years ago. I will never forget him and his sweet and loving nature.
Rascal came into our lives when my son was 15 and my daughter 13. A co-worker’s brother had left Rascal with her on his move from California to Florida. She already had as many animals as she could handle and was looking for a good home in which to place him. She brought a picture of Rascal to work with her, which she passed around to her coworkers, my being one. I took the picture home to show my children and they pleaded with me to bring him home. I agreed that I would bring him home on the condition that they would care for him. Well, we all know how that works out.
On the day she brought him into the office, in his carrier, for me to take home he totally charmed me with his ‘big blue eyes’ shining out of his pure white fluffy little face. In spite of his being male and his age he was a small cat. My children and I fell in love with him. He was the most affectionate cat I have ever had. Rascal would lie down beside me, underneath my chin, and reach up with his little paw and gently caress my face. If I were crying he would do the same. My son and Rascal formed a very special bond. Rascal was always there to comfort and love you when you needed it the most.
I do not know what I would do without all the wonderful animals that God has put upon this earth.
