Deer population control debated in Mamaroneck

February 26, 2015

Officials in the village of Mamaroneck are trying to figure out what to do with the ever-growing deer population.

Mamaroneck Mayor Norman Rosenblum met with Westchester County and DEC officials in Rye last night to discuss options. Some programs that are being considered include killing the deer either by rifle or bow and arrow or even contraception to stop deer births.

But animal advocates are hoping for a humane option.

"It has to be non-lethal. They share the earth with us. If this entire panel can convince everyone that something has to be done, it has to be humane," says Kiley Blackman, of Animal Defenders of Westchester."
